 Encinitas Union School District Visits SDCOE LRDC to Review Math Materials for Adoption

​A group of 30 teachers from Encinitas Union School District recently visited the County Office to review Mathematics materials for an upcoming Math Adoption. The teachers reviewed materials from nine different Mathematic publishers choosing three to implement in their classrooms.

“In making sure that we choose the right publishers to meet our students needs, we looked at the STAR results to see where our students need the most help,” said Deborah Blow, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services in Encinitas. “Our teachers are dedicated to finding the best materials that will be beneficial to all students learning.”

The Learning Resource Display Center (LRDC) provides a central location for K-8 instructional materials to be previewed before school districts make their adoption decisions. “The LRDC is a great center for districts to bring their selection committee. All the resources and our support team is here to help the process move smoothly and answer questions as well,” said Tony Spears, Senior Director of Curriculum and Instruction at the County Office of Education.

Every seven years districts are required to adopt new mathematical curriculum. The new materials will be piloted next fall, and the Encinitas teachers are fired up. “Math is by far one of the toughest subjects to teach,” said Errolyn Healy, who teaches third and fourth graders at Olivenhain Pioneer School. “I’m looking for material that will give my students a real world understanding of math, something that fits in with the world and applies logical and creative thinking.”

“I am looking for materials that lend themselves to some hands-on activities with Spanish components,” said Chelsea Charles, a third grade dual immersion mathematics teacher at Capri Elementary. “There are a lot to choose from, which is great, but it’s hard to narrow them down!”

In November 2007, the State Board of Education conducted a public hearing on proposed instructional materials for mathematics and three separate categories were chosen. Basic Grade Level, designed to provide a full year of instruction in all the mathematics standards; Algebra Readiness, focusing on building skills to succeed in algebra; and Intervention Programs, designed to provide additional support to students struggling in mathematics.

In addition, the Mathematics Adoption Toolkit was created to support the selection of instructional materials for grade K-8 core programs, Algebra Readiness, and Intervention. It can also be used to support a grade 9–12 adoption process.

“The instructional materials adoption is one of the most critical decisions a district makes as it progresses into the next decade,” said Tony Spears, Senior Director of Curriculum and Instruction. “These selected programs become the basis for implementing the academic content standards in Mathematics and are aligned to the state assessment system.”
