More than 27,000 fans were in attendance to honor the local teaching
profession at the Padres 9th Annual Teacher Appreciation Night at Petco
Each teacher in attendance received a commemorative pennant in honor of
the night, and all 44 San Diego County school district Teachers of the
Year were honored on the field before the game. In addition, the
reigning County Teachers of the Year simultaneously threw out the game’s
first pitch. Ashford University, the title sponsor for the annual
academy awards-style County Teacher of the Year Awards television
production, Cox Presents A Salute to Teachers, was the sponsor for
Teacher Appreciation Night.
And to top it off, the Padres beat the Cincinnati Reds to start off their home stand.
“This is the kind of recognition that all teachers deserve,” said County
Superintendent of Schools Randy Ward, “We’re very fortunate to have
partners like the Padres and Ashford University. To honor teachers at
the ballpark in front of a big crowd like that is just great. You could
tell from the cheers that this community loves its teachers.”
Ward and three of the members of the County Board of Education were
honored at home plate before the game, along with Ashford University
President Jane McAuliffe and the three Ashford University scholarship
And before the on-field ceremony, all of the school district Teachers of
the Year and Ashford scholarship recipients were hosted by Cox
Communications and Ashford in the 15th-floor Diamond View Tower,
overlooking the ballpark and San Diego Bay.
“It’s a pleasure to work with Ashford University and the San Diego
County Office of Education to honor our teachers,” said Cox
Communications Vice President and General Manager Bill Geppert, in the
Diamond View reception. “The education community means a great deal to
us at Cox Communications. We thoroughly enjoy this.”
