Two Years Strong Undefeated Rancho Bernardo High Wins San Diego County Academic League Championship

Two time champs Rancho Bernardo High School dominated the battle of the brains competition, winning a victory over La Jolla High School with a 99 to 77 score at the 2010 San Diego County Academic League Championship.

Just before the championship match, representing the North County, RB High beat out South County team Hilltop High School in one semi-final match, and La Jolla out scored Santana High School who brought the East County power to the competition.

“I am very pleased with this season,” said John Nascimento, Hilltop High Academic League Coach. “My students did a great job this season and with a senior laden team it’s time for some re-building and some re-loading. I’m looking forward to next season.”

Replays of the championship will air on iTV Ch. 16 May 6 at 7 p.m., June 5 at 10:00 a.m. and June 6 at 2:00 p.m.

Last year, Rancho Bernardo’s score was believed to be the highest ever in Academic League championship history. This year’s opponents La Jolla High wouldn’t give up without a fight. “It’s so exciting to see these students hard work pay off!” said Nicole Shina, Special Programs Assistant, SDCOE.

Rancho Bernardo’s five starters already have a long list of accomplishments. Team member Julia Brown, a senior, was the 2006 San Diego County Spelling Bee Champion as an 8th grader at Bernardo Heights Middle School.

All four semi-finalist schools competed over the course of eight consecutive weeks to earn a place in the Final Four. Questions in the popular competition come from math, science, history and literature. Using the fast-paced format of toss-up questions and immediate answers, Academic League not only matches extremely bright students, but forces them to compete against the clock as well.

Former County Teacher of the Year Mark Heinze served as moderator and former radio and television professional Clark Anthony as announcer.
