County Teachers of the Year are Honored at Aztecs Game

San Diego County’s five Teachers of the Year were honored at halftime of San Diego State’s basketball game Saturday, joined in the center-court recognition by SDSU President Stephen Weber, County Superintendent Randy Ward, and Union-Tribune Publisher Ed Moss.

Each of the five Teachers of the Year were personally congratulated by Weber and presented with a commemorative gift from the university. Also taking part in the annual recognition were SDSU interim Athletic Director Don Oberhelman and Union-Tribune executive Drew Schlosberg.

The five County Teachers of the Year are:
Donna Farquar of the Santee School District.
Mike Love of the Grossmont Union High School District.
Eric Mabrey of the Sweetwater Union High School District.
Melanie Tolan of the County Office of Education’s Juvenile Court and Community Schools (now known as Momentum Learning).
And Kelly Kovacic of The Preuss School, a charter school in San Diego Unified School District.

Tolan and Kovacic have been named California Teachers of the Year as well, which drew even louder applause from the Viejas Arena crowd of 10,500.

The applause grew even louder when the public address announcer told the crowd that Kovacic was “soon with travel to the White House to meet the President and First Lady as one of four finalists for United States Teacher of the Year!

“Ladies and gentlemen,” the announcer concluded, “please help the Aztecs honor these great community heroes...our 2010 San Diego County Teachers of the Year.”
