Migrant Education Employees Give to Needy Families

Employees with San Diego County Office of Education’s Migrant Education program will donate 15 care baskets to needy migrant families soon as part of an annual holiday effort.

The managers of each of the program’s five areas donated food, school supplies, laundry baskets and other necessities at a meeting Dec. 5 and plan to distribute them to the area’s neediest families later in the month. They have given to migrant families in the area in one way or another for several years.

“We know them very personally, because our staff works with them on a home-visit, family-to-family basis,” said Patricia Wilcox, a specialist with the program. “Our staff knows very personally how much in need they are.”

And that need has increased in recent years, she said.

The Migrant Education program’s Region IX is administered through SDCOE and includes all of San Diego and Orange counties. Employees with the program work to connect migrant families with resources schools and community agencies.
