New Training Helps Build Understanding of Math Standards

A new professional learning opportunity being offered by the San Diego County Office of Education will help educators support parents’ understanding of the California math standards.

At the one-day sessions, teachers and administrators will create a new service or improve one they’re already doing to help parents build a deeper understanding about the new state standards. These might include coffee with the principal, back to school night, open house, family math nights or other events as well as publications such as newsletters.

The session will help educators create more descriptive messages and provide hands-on learning opportunities for parents.

“They’re going to leave with a service ready to provide,” said Mark Alcorn, a mathematics coordinator with the County Office of Education.

There are two separate one-day sessions scheduled: one July 28 and another Aug. 11. Either one is $75 for an individual and $60 for any other members of the same team. Visit the County Office of Education website for more information about the sessions and registration.
