 San Diego County Board of Education Marks 50/50 Day

​The San Diego County Board of Education unanimously passed a resolution at its April 2018 meeting endorsing today, April 26, 2018, as 50/50 Day. Resolution 2018-16 reads:

WHEREAS, the San Diego County Board of Education has a history of advocating for equity and promoting access to high-quality educational opportunities for all students so that children have what they need to succeed in school and beyond; and WHEREAS, the San Diego County Board of Education and San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) are committed to supporting all students, including students from diverse backgrounds; and

WHEREAS, SDCOE teams are actively working to identify and remove equity challenges and systemic barriers to student success, including around issues of gender equity; and

WHEREAS, female students make up 49 percent of the San Diego County K-12 school population; and

WHEREAS, 50/50 Day is a global initiative focusing on how to get to a more gender-equitable world for everyone—all genders, all ages, across all intersecting issues; and 

WHEREAS, the core principles of 50/50 Day are to include all genders, all races, and all issues; to bring the change where it needs to happen; and to invite everyone, wherever they stand on the issue of gender equality; and 

WHEREAS, the second annual 50/50 Day is being held on April 26, 2018; and 

WHEREAS, SDCOE will join thousands of groups in related activities, including short-film screenings, exploration of discussion materials, and a Global Live-Cast featuring prominent leaders talking about equity across all sectors of society, from the economy and politics to culture and home; and WHEREAS, both men and women can move the conversation forward and encourage the change needed for a more equitable society; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the San Diego County Board of Education and SDCOE will continue to work with a broad spectrum of community stakeholders to develop, implement, and monitor policies and programs that foster and support success for all students; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the San Diego County Board of Education supports efforts to achieve equity in all areas, including gender; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the San Diego County Board of Education commemorates April 26, 2018, as 50/50 Day; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that SDCOE will make schools aware of and encourage participation in 50/50 Day.
