The Carson Scholars Program recognizes and rewards academic excellence and humanitarian qualities in young students enrolled in grades 4 through 11. Carson Scholars receive a $1,000 scholarship invested towards a four-year college or university, an Olympic-sized medal, certificate and recognition at a regional awards banquet. Their school receives a trophy recognizing their accomplishments.
San Diego County educators are encouraged to participate in the Carson Scholars Program by nominating a deserving student. Each school is eligible to nominate one student who is a leader in the community and who has at least a 3.75 GPA for the current school year.
The school nominates a student and completes the online nomination form by the Dec. 20, 2017 deadline. Within 48 hours of nomination approval, the student will receive an email with a link to the online application.
The nominated student completes the online application by the Jan. 8, 2018 deadline. The application includes submission of an essay, report card, biographical information, community service details and (online) teacher recommendation.
The principal receives an email on Jan. 10, 2018 asking him/her to verify that the nominee's application has been completed honestly. That verification must be done by Jan. 12, 2018. Please note that principals cannot be sent verification information until after the application has closed.
The program offers a number of helpful resources to assist nominators:
