Aurora Perez works daily to stress the importance of good nutrition and encouraging students to bring a positive attitude to school.
Perez is a field assistant for the San Diego County Office of Education's Juvenile Court and Community Schools program. She has been with SDCOE for nearly three years and was recently honored as one of SDCOE Classified Employee of the Month.
Perez manages the food service for the south region of JCCS. For the students, she is a role model, mom, confidante, and adviser.
"The students often express their concerns to her and she eases their insecurity with warmth and concern," Nutrition Services Supervisor Jerry Smith said.
Perez's efforts go beyond the classroom. She works with Feeding San Diego to help ensure that students and their families overcome food insecurity and participated in Youth Mental Health First Aid training.
Smith also cited Perez's excellent communication skills in working with site administrators, staff members, and students, so that teachers can concentrate on teaching and students can focus on learning.
When she's not at work, Perez enjoys spending time with her three sons, hiking, and going to the movies with her husband.
