Getting to Know SDCOE: Administrative Assistant Helps Support Schools

From the warm greetings she gives to visitors and colleagues to the way she rearranges her schedule on a dime to help her team, Zeret Lara's positivity is contagious, according to her nominators for San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) Classified Employee of the Year.

Lara has been an administrative assistant with the Regional System of District and School Support team for three years and she has been at SDCOE in Learning and Leadership Services (LLS) for 10 years.

"She juggles her many responsibilities with an upbeat attitude and a smile on her face," said Kirsten Grimm, executive leadership coach.

Lara has taken on several leadership roles in LLS, such as coordinating the 2016-17 LLS staff retreat and the 2017-18 LLS kickoff. She has also led divisionwide staff development including co-creating sessions that build team collaboration and improve communication.

"Her humble demeanor creates approachability by all; her reflective way encourages an environment of enthusiasm and creates a following among her peers," said executive leadership coach Sheelagh Moran.

Zeret directed a Mexican folk dance group for more than 15 years with Ballet Folklorico Ixtlan. Through her troupe, she worked with students in San Diego, Sweetwater, and Chula Vista school districts to build leadership skills and self-esteem. She also volunteers for her son's baseball team and at her church.
