As the school year gets underway, nominations have begun arriving in the Communications department inbox with inspiring and touching stories of teachers and students across our school districts. Whether it be teachers hoping to win a cash prize to help with classroom supplies, or a school counselor or parent sharing a touching story of a student or teacher so they can be recognized for their dedication, the lucky teachers and students who are selected for these incentive programs come away feeling like superstars for a day.
These recognition opportunities are made possible thanks to the partnerships SDCOE has with various community members. Our partners provide the prizes, while the Communications department promotes the opportunities, vets the nominees, schedules the recognitions, and in many cases visits the schools to make the announcements in person.
Teachers and students from all school districts across the county and even in some of our own SDCOE schools can participate in these incentive programs, and anyone can get involved by nominating a deserving teacher or student. Learn more about our four main recognition programs, the qualification criteria for each, and how to submit a nomination, in the School Stars page on our website:
- NBC 7 San Diego Inspirational Teacher or Student of the Month
- Class Acts with Jam'n 95.7 and Mission Federal Credit Union
- Teachers are Heroes with Entercom Communications and Mission Federal Credit Union
- Torero Achievement Club with the University of San Diego Athletics Department
In addition to the above, the San Diego State University Athletics Department offers several opportunities for school groups to get free tickets to Aztecs games. The annual Field Trip Days and Girls and Women in Sports Day allow K-8 students, teachers, and parents to get free tickets to women's basketball games and experience fun educational opportunities. To receive advance notice of these events, sign up to receive our monthly What's Happening newsletter.
Within the last five years, SDCOE and its partners have honored the hard work of 57 NBC Inspirational Teachers and Students, celebrated 48 committed educators and their entire classrooms with Teachers are Heroes, delivered gift cards and prizes to 178 teachers through Class Acts (formerly Max Out my Class), and handed out thousands of tickets to SDSU Aztecs and USD Torero games.
Write in about the school stars you may know, and chances are they may join the ranks of happy teachers and students who have been recognized for their excellent work!
