County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Gothold released the following statement regarding the shooting at the Chabad of Poway.
Our hearts are with all affected by today's senseless tragedy in Poway. Sadly, today's shooting in Poway is the latest in a series of horrifying murders in locations where people should feel safe. We must stand united against hate and focus on building a culture that is inclusive and invested in the well-being of each member of the community.
Schools can serve as a resource to help begin the healing; the San Diego County Office of Education has offered our support to Poway Unified and schools across the county to help educators talk to students about how hate takes hold and what they can do to fight it.
The San Diego County Office of Education has compiled the following resources to assist schools and teachers in communicating about this senseless attack.
Helping Children Cope With Terrorism from the National Association of School Psychologists offers tips for families and educators. Translations of this handout are available in Amharic, Chinese, French, Korean, Spanish, and Vietnamese. There is also a companion infographic.
Anti-Defamation League materials that may also be useful include these lesson plans on responding to hate and violence and on swastikas and other hate symbols.
