School Supplies Drive Kicks Off With $5,000 in Donations from SDCCU Super Shred Event

The 2019 Stuff The Bus school supplies drive is off to a strong head-start thanks to the generosity of San Diego community members who donated more than $5,000 last weekend at San Diego County Credit Union’s (SDCCU) Super Shred Event.

For the fifth straight year, the San Diego County Office of Education’s (SDCOE) Homeless Education Services team is partnering with SDCCU for the Stuff the Bus campaign to benefit the more than 22,000 children experiencing homelessness in the region. SDCCU includes Stuff the Bus in its Super Shred Event, inviting those who are dropping off recycling and materials to be shredded to make a donation to the school supplies drive.

On Saturday in the SDCCU Stadium parking lot, SDCOE volunteers collected $5,179.78. That's enough to buy more than 450 backpacks, each filled with two spiral notebooks, two glue sticks, one 24-pack of crayons, one eight-pack of washable markers, one large eraser, one pencil sharpener, one 12-pack of No. 2 pencils, one 12-inch ruler, and two twin-pocket portfolios.

There are many ways to give during the Stuff the Bus campaign, including online now at Crowdrise.com/stuff-the-bus. Donations are welcome in any amount; for example, $10 will provide for the purchase of a backpack for a secondary-age student or basic supplies kit, while $15 covers the cost of a backpack filled with supplies for an elementary-age student.

Stuff the Bus officially kicks off July 1, with two SDCCU buses touring the county to collect new, unused school supplies during stops at credit union branches, shopping centers, and partner agencies. In addition, collection bins for donations of new school supplies will be available throughout July at all San Diego County SDCCU branches and select SDCOE locations, including:

  • SDCOE main campus, 6401 Linda Vista Road, San Diego (Information Office and Cafeteria)
  • SDCOE Homeless Education Services office, 3878 Old Town Ave., Suite 200, San Diego
  • North County Regional Educational Center, 255 Pico Ave., San Marcos
  • South County Regional Education Center, 800 National City Blvd., National City

In 2018, the campaign collected more than 231,000 new supplies. Organizers are hopeful that they will surpass that this summer.

“The San Diego community consistently shows their generosity when it comes to helping students who are in need,” said Dr. Paul Gothold, San Diego County Superintendent of Schools. “I’m looking forward to seeing even greater results as our Homeless Education Services team and partners at San Diego County Credit Union engage even more donors.”
