 County Board Declares Dec. 9-15, 2019 Computer Science Education Week

​​The San Diego County Board of Education unanimously passed a resolution at its December 2019 meeting declaring Dec. 9-15, 2019 as Computer Science Education Week. The resolution reads:

WHEREAS, the San Diego County Board of Education supports the adoption of computer science standards by the California State Board of Education in furthering computer science education across the County of San Diego and the State of California; and 

WHEREAS, the board commends the Association for Computing Machinery, the Computer Science Teachers Association, and the National Center for Women in Information Technology for their long-standing dedication to Computer Science education for all students and support for Computer Science Education Week nationally; and 

WHEREAS, according to the 2019 State of Computer Science Education national report, only 28% of high schools that taught Advanced Placement (AP) courses offered an AP computer science course in California; and 

WHEREAS, according to the 2019 State of Computer Science Education national report, of AP computer science exam participants only 30% were female and only 27% were underrepresented minority students in California; and 

WHEREAS, according to the 2019 Advancing San Diego regional report, local companies are expected to hire 7,220 software professionals by the year 2022; and

WHEREAS, according to the 2017 San Diego Workforce Partnership regional report, local companies are expected to hire 15,135 information technology professionals by the year 2022; and 

WHEREAS, schools play a vital role in the technical education of San Diego youth. Early first impressions and continued development of skills and practices regarding computing systems, networks, data analysis, programming, and the impacts of computing are critical for the future workforce of San Diego County and the growth of all youth into 21st century citizens; 

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the San Diego County Board of Education declares Dec. 9-15, 2019, as Computer Science Education Week.
