Ramona Unified School District's James Dukes Elementary Parent Teacher Association (PTA) has been recognized as a Healthy School Fundraising Champion for contributing to a healthy school environment leading to student success.
The school's March 9 “Color Run” fundraiser was honored by the San Diego County Childhood Obesity Initiative and its Schools and After School Domain Workgroup as a positive example of how to raise needed funds while sending a consistent message about healthy lifestyles to students and parents. James Dukes Elementary serves as a model for other schools as a way to demonstrate effective strategies to increase physical activity and focus on healthy eating throughout the school year.
The Color Run, which hosted 540 student-runners, raised more than $20,000 and was coordinated by James Dukes PTA Vice President of Fundraising Katie Sprankles. Marine Corps Air Station, Miramar’s MALS-11, provided volunteer support by helping students warm up for the run and dropping color in their hair. The money raised will allow the school to purchase an electronic marquee for the front of the school site, as well as STEM materials.
