Burlington Stores, Inc., through its partnership with AdoptAClassroom.org, donated $10,000 to the Oceanside Unified School District (OUSD) to purchase new books for two-way bilingual immersion education.
Representatives from Burlington Stores presented a check to district staff during a special ceremony yesterday at the new local Burlington store in Oceanside.
OUSD's two-way bilingual immersion program is designed as a full immersion program. Students start in Kindergarten or first grade and spend 90% of their day in Spanish. As students progress through the grade levels, Spanish is decreased and English is increased so that by 5th grade, they have a 50/50 day. Classrooms include English Learners students and students who are already proficient in English, with the goal of reading, writing and speaking two languages, and exchanging their cultures. After continuing the program through high school, students receive a seal of biliteracy on their diploma.
The district will use these funds to put new Spanish books in classrooms and libraries. This will help support bi-literate learning and increase the representation of OUSD's student body in the literature they read and have access to at school.
“On behalf of the Oceanside Unified School District, I would like to thank Burlington and AdoptAClassroom.org for this generous donation. We are excited to purchase new books for our libraries and classrooms,” Superintendent Dr. Julie Vitale said. “It is so important that students have access to literature that inspires them and provides characters and storylines that they can identify with.”
