Students from Fallbrook High,
Vista High, Mission Hills High and San Dieguito Academy participated in the 1st
Annual North County ROP Culinary Arts Competition-The Soup Bowl Invitational.
Students faced off in the competition hosted by Vista High School in their
state-of-the-art, full-sized industrial kitchen.
Teams spent months
sharpening their skills and perfecting their soup recipes, and competed in
inter-class, and in some cases inter-district competitions to advance to the
Soup Bowl Invitational.
With the Silver Ladle on the line, competition
was fierce in the kitchen as judges, media and spectators from the San Diego
County Office of Education looked on. The teams had 90-minutes to prepare their
soups, and were evaluated on a variety of components from taste and texture, to
organization, sanitation and professionalism.
Students were evaluated by
a panel of professional chefs and food writers including Chef Ann Richardson
from Dream Dinners, Chef Michael Zonfrilli from the Art Institute, Chef Frosty
Hansen from Sysco, David Boylan, host of Lick the Plate Radio on KPRi and Chris
Ross from the UT San Diego.
Teams produced four distinctly different and
delicious soups including a Creamy Pumpkin Soup with Chili-Cran Apple Relish and
Cranberry Sage Scones (San Dieguito), Chicken Tortilla Soup (Fallbrook), Shrimp
Bisque (Vista) and Chicken Tortilla Soup with Fire Roasted Tomatoes and Chipotle
Fallbrook was awarded the Silver Ladle for their
Chicken Tortilla Soup, and Vista’s Shrimp Bisque came in as runner-up.
In addition to the Silver Ladle, Fallbrook will keep the competition’s
perpetual plaque until next year, their recipe will be featured as the “Recipe
of the Week” in the UT San Diego, and the team will receive behind the scenes
tours at Chick-fil-A, Quarry Creek and Whole Foods Encinitas.
competition was designed as a pilot program for a Countywide contest which will
be open to all ROP Culinary programs in San Diego County.
