​​Each month, the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) highlights low-cost or no-cost opportunities in the What's Happening newsletter. The September edition includes several SDCOE-offered programs and resources, along with offerings by some of our community partners. Deeper Learning Workshops

Deeper learning experiences can empower students to be lifelong learners and flourish in school and life. SDCOE's Curriculum and Instruction team is hosting a one-hour virtual workshop to explore the foundations of deeper learning, why it matters, and how it helps prepare our students for a future without boundaries.

K-12 teachers and administrators can register to join our curriculum, instruction, and leadership experts on one of two dates. Click one of the dates below to learn more and register. There is no cost to attend.

Free Virtual Symposium on S
uicide Prevention

Ninth District PTA, in partnership with Rady Children's Hospital, presents its third annual Suicide Prevention Symposium. This free event brings parents, caregivers, educators, and health care professionals together to learn about suicidal ideation in teens and share strategies to prevent youth suicide.

The Sept. 18 virtual event will include a full day of presentations by leading experts, interactive discussions, and workshops. Spanish interpretation will be provided. View an event flyer with more details, including the day's agenda. Visit the event registration page.

CDE Launches Purple Star Program

The California Department of Education (CDE) announces the California Purple Star Program as a way to publicly recognize schools that are committed to meet the unique needs of military-connected students and their families. The program aims to support students as they relocate to new schools by setting standards and publicly designating military-friendly schools.

Application materials for schools and more information are available on the CDE Purple Star webpage. The application deadline is Oct. 1, and school designations will be announced in January 2022. Contact or 916-319-0893 with any questions.

State Board of Education Student Board Member 

The California State Board of Education (SBE) is currently accepting applications for a student board member position for 2022–23. All California residents enrolled in a public high school who will be a senior in good standing during the 2022–23 academic year are eligible to apply. Interested students must also be available to attend a virtual, statewide student leader conference from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1, 2021. The application deadline is Oct. 8.
