San Diego County Board of Education Reaffirms Commitment to Fight Racism

At its June meeting, the San Diego County Board of Education voted unanimously to adopt a resolution reaffirming the commitment of the board and San Diego County Office of Education to fight racism.

The resolution reads:

Whereas, we have a moral obligation to provide a safe, equitable, and high-quality education for all students; and

Whereas, recent racially charged incidents have deeply hurt many of our students and others in our communities; and

Whereas, schools are the cornerstones of communities, and educators can play a powerful role in changing people’s perceptions and processes; and

Whereas, the San Diego County Board of Education and San Diego County Office of Education continue to take an unwavering stand against racism in all forms; and

Whereas, we believe that we – individually and collectively – must create nurturing learning environments where every student has equitable access and opportunity, regardless of their skin color or ethnicity; and

Whereas, the San Diego County Board of Education and San Diego County Office of Education value the different cultures and ethnicities of our workforce and further our commitment to anti-racist leadership and inclusive working environments where each person is treated with respect and dignity; and

Whereas, one of the San Diego County Board of Education’s stated goals is to “provide educational opportunities and supports to SDCOE schools and school districts so that all students, including our historically underserved students, are successful”; and

Whereas, the San Diego County Board of Education and San Diego County Office of Education are committed to serving all of the students in San Diego County by providing resources and guidance to school districts and charter schools to help educators and students combat racism.

Therefore, be it resolved that the San Diego County Board of Education and county superintendent of schools reaffirm their commitments to fighting racism in all of its forms through a safe, equitable, and high-quality education for all students and an inclusive working environment for all employees.

To deliver on the promise of educational equity for all students, the San Diego County Board of Education is committed to providing educational opportunities and support to district and school leaders, teachers and other stakeholders so that all students, including our historically underserved students, are served well and are successful.
