Sherri Shepherd, star of stage and screen, will host the 25th annual "Cox Presents: A Salute to Teachers," brought to you by San Diego County Credit Union, an Academy Awards-style television extravaganza celebrating local teachers and announcing who among 44 nominees will be named a San Diego County Teacher of the Year. Produced in partnership with the San Diego County Office of Education, "Cox Presents: A Salute to Teachers" will feature musical and dance performances, and will be televised LIVE from the Balboa Theatre in downtown San Diego at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10.on Channel 4 San Diego (1004 in HD).
Shepherd, who won a Daytime Emmy award for Outstanding Talk Show Host as one of the co-hosts of "The View," also appeared on the hit TV show "Dancing with the Stars" and guest-starred on the Emmy award-winning TV show "30 Rock" as Tracy Morgan's wife. She had a successful run in the critically-acclaimed Broadway hit musical "Cinderella," and will appear in two new movies, "Woodlawn" with Jon Voight (in theaters Oct. 16), and "Ride Along 2" with Kevin Hart (in theaters in January 2016).
Shepherd will be joined by co-hosts Kyra Phillips, a CNN correspondent and San Diego native, and veteran San Diego broadcast journalist Dennis Morgigno. A graduate of Helix High School in La Mesa, Phillips has been with CNN since 1999, where she has served as an anchor and correspondent from the network's world headquarters in Atlanta. She has reported on topics such as Sept. 11, Hurricane Katrina, and Iraqi students in Baghdad who risk their lives every day to attend school. Morgigno is an Emmy Award-winning San Diego TV news anchor and former station manager of Channel 4 San Diego.
"Cox Presents: A Salute to Teachers" will celebrate San Diego's 26,000 public school teachers, and highlight the 44 nominees for Teacher of the Year who were selected by their respective school districts. Of those 44 nominees, five will be named a County Teacher of the Year, and will represent the region at the California Teacher of the Year program later this year.
The top five teachers are selected based on student achievement, professional development and community involvement, teaching philosophy and personal style, knowledge of educational issues and trends, promotion and development of the teaching profession, accountability and ability to serve as ambassadors of education.
"Cox Presents: A Salute to Teachers" has received national recognition, and has earned more than 20 Emmy Awards for Channel 4 San Diego.
