County Superintendent Statement on Upholding Positive School Culture

San Diego County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Gothold released the following statement after a recent incident where a staff member knelt on a high school student’s neck after intervening in a student altercation:

Like many in our community, my heart was heavy after seeing videos and photos of a recent incident that took place at a high school in San Diego County. The leadership team at the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) strongly believes that it is never appropriate for an adult to kneel on a student’s neck.

At SDCOE, we believe schools should be, and continue to create, places of calm, care, and support for our students. We should always strive to address issues using a restorative approach that builds community, strengthens relationships, and improves school climate.

SDCOE works with districts and schools across the region to provide educational opportunities and support to administrators, teachers, and staff so that all students’ needs are met and that every child is successful in our schools. We stand ready and willing to marshal our resources at any time in support of our districts and schools.
