County Superintendent Statement on the Retirement of San Diego Unified Supt. Bill Kowba

Dr. Randy Ward, San Diego County Superintendent of Schools, released the following statement today after San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Bill Kowba announced his impending retirement:

I wish Bill the best of luck and much happiness in his retirement. We all know he works long hours; hopefully retirement will allow him to devote those hours to time with his loved ones instead.

To use a naval analogy, which is fitting given Bill’s background, he provided a stabilizing rudder that guided the district through the rough waters of the state’s fiscal crisis. Bill’s strong leadership has made a difference not only in San Diego Unified, but also across the County, as seen in his able chairing of the Superintendents’ Achievement Gap Task Force (AGTF). The AGTF focuses on the very important work of ensuring all students are prepared for the 21st century global workforce, and Bill has led the group by example; he genuinely cares about doing what’s best for children.

On behalf of the other 41 superintendents in the County, thank you, Bill, for your dedicated service in support of students.
