Student Art on Display at SDCOE

Art from local students is on display in the foyer of Building 3, showcasing the winners of a recent countywide contest the SDCOE organized along with the San Diego County Art Education Association.

The paintings and drawings will stay up until the end of September, when there will be a reception for the students who created them.

Not only do the students get their artwork seen by employees and visitors, but having the work up also helps spruce up the building, said Russ Sperling, visual and performing arts coordinator with the SDCOE.

“It just brings life to what would be sort of a drab area,” he said.

The winners were picked by art teachers from throughout the county.

The winning students in grades kindergarten through second are Aalivah Sheptock, first place; Isabella Canales, second place; Jessica McWilliams, third place; and Lindsay Griffin, honorable mention.

In grades three through five, the winners are Neel Kumar, first place; Ryan Fay, second place; Ruben Torrez, third place; and Lorelei Robinson, honorable mention.

All of the elementary-school winners are from the San Diego Unified School District. There were no submissions from middle school students.

The winners in grades nine through twelve are Noah Monaghan, first place; Matthew Collins, second place; Kiana Person, third place; and Jenny Nguyen, honorable mention. They are all from Grossmont High School.

“The quality of work we got was very good,” Sperling said.
