For more than 18 years, Katie Andersen has helped connect students with nature as an outdoor education specialist at Cuyamaca Outdoor School, the San Diego County Office of Education's site that's home of the original 6th Grade Camp.
"In her role as an outdoor education specialist, Katie has a vital task — to educate fifth and sixth graders in nature's classroom while ensuring their safety and helping them feel comfortable with each other and outdoors," Principal Kris Pamintuan said. "She is a brilliant educator who consistently implements a wide variety of teaching techniques to involve and include students of all levels and abilities."
With these skills and knowledge, Andersen is able to bring engaging learning experiences to each student during their week at the school, which is located in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, she has used her expertise to share similar experiences with students online, improve the facilities at camp, and revamp the curriculum.
"Her strong commitment to quality education, drive for excellence, and genuine concern for students and her community make her an outstanding member of the outdoor education team," said Dustin Burns, Outdoor Education.
