JCCS Educational Project Wins Inspire Award from CFF

The Classroom of the Future Foundation (CFF) recently announced its Innovation in Education Award winners, including the Inspire award for the Creating Our Future Design Jam fall project created by San Diego County Office of Education's (SDCOE) Juvenile Court and Community Schools (JCCS).

The Inspire award is given to a program that inspires, excites, motivates, sparks and/or influences teachers to teach and students to learn through exceptional, unprecedented, or extraordinary programs. It comes with a $5,000 grant. Other categories include the Achieve, Innovate, and Impact awards.

With the Creating Our Future Design Jam, students were encouraged to explore relevant issues such as environmental justice and the 2020 election through the lens of equity and answer the question, "What does it take to change the world?" The project included two film festivals of documentaries on environmental justice initiatives to serve as inspiration for the students’ own projects and concluded with a virtual exhibition to showcase student work.

“We were excited to learn about the award and grant because our teachers, our students, and our program were being recognized for being innovative and our students’ voices were really being heard, even in a time when people were feeling disconnected and unsure,” said Sara Matthews, JCCS instructional coach.

“Getting the grant really validated our students’ voices and being able to tell the students we received it made them feel like people were listening to their voices, that their ideas are powerful, and they matter,” she said.

Other winners include Poway Unified School District’s Adobe Bluffs Elementary School’s Mandarin programs (Impact Award) and the CyberAegis Team (Achieve Award); and Grossmont Union High School District’s Growing Readers through Gamification Summer Reading Program (Innovate Award). All were considered as programs that motivate K-12 students about learning and increasing student achievement.

All awardees applied for the innovation grants through an online request for application process, and an application review panel consisting of leaders in the business and education communities selected the winners.

This year’s honorees will be recognized Sept. 23 with an in-person event at SeaWorld San Diego, where educators and business leaders will come together to also highlight champions of educational innovation in the community, as well as exceptional students pursuing careers in STEM education.

Registration and tickets are required for this exclusive awards event, which will include a red carpet ceremony, the Innovation in Education Awards program, and a post-event dessert reception. You can help CFF recognize and celebrate the achievements of this year's amazing award winners by purchasing a ticket to attend the event.
