SDCOE Employee Wins Lifetime Achievement Award

A San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) employee will get a lifetime achievement honor as a technology leader at the Top Tech Awards in May.

Dr. Mark Zecca, executive director of Education Business Systems, is being recognized for his work in a variety of leadership and consulting positions, including chief information officer, vice president, and IT director at both national and international companies such as PeopleSoft, Schneider Electric, and American Airlines.

"I have been extremely blessed throughout my career, and this award really ties that history together," Zecca said. "The bosses that had to deal with me and my crazy ideas, and the many teams that had to put up with me and my expectations are the ones who really deserve this award."

His wide area of experience includes building the first datacenter for the U.S. Coast Guard, developing the first loyalty management system with American Airlines, implementing Southwest Airlines' first digital reservation system, building the first commercial insurance website, and developing several offshore print-to-digital conversion operations.

At SDCOE, Zecca is focused on improving the Education Business Systems user experience as well as data and information flows.

Dr. Zecca earned his doctorate in information technology management from Capella University. He also holds a master's degree in strategy and planning from the Naval War College, and a master's degree in business administration from Le Tourneau University. He is a retired Coast Guard captain who served in Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom.  Zecca is no stranger to the Top Tech Awards, having won the Top Tech Executive of the Year for small-medium business in 2010 and the Top Tech Executive of the Year for large business in 2012.
