Second Chance Community School recently moved up the street to a larger location that will allow Juvenile Court and Community Schools (JCCS) to welcome additional students and better serve those currently attending.
The school will now be co-locating at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego Encanto branch at 6785 Imperial Ave, and will also have a new name, which is still being determined.
Second Chance mostly serves students in Encanto so it was important for them to stay in the neighborhood, said Principal Theresa Fox.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego Encanto branch is a larger site, which is more important now during the time of physical distancing, and will allow the school to serve more students. Approximately 12 students attend regularly, but more than 45 students are enrolled. The school has also been used as an enrollment center so the added space will help accommodate that activity.
“It’s a great match,” said JCCS Executive Director Tracy Thompson. “We share the same vision for helping students and the entire community.”
Other amenities at the new site include a student cool-down room, and its own kitchen and bathrooms. There is also separate office space for the teachers and counselors, who previously shared space, to have private meetings with students at the same time. There are five to eight staff members on campus at any given time.
In the future, Second Chance will be able to use the outdoor space, some of the recreation facilities, and partner with some of the programs at the site.
“We leave the Second Chance location with a heavy heart,” said Fox. “We have formed friendships with the staff and loved the work skills programs they offered our students. Our goal is to continue to partner with the Second Chance staff, especially on their Youth Garden Program, STRIVE program, and WIOA programs. They also continue to collaborate with our SOAR Academies.”
