Solana Beach School District Imagines its "Vivid Vision" with a New Pandemic Lens

When the Solana Beach School District (SBSD) set out to reimagine its mission, vision, values, and goals in 2019, the Imagining Our Vivid Vision (IOVV) committee of nearly 100 individuals from throughout SBSD's schools and communities, including the board of education and former SBSD students, could not have imagined what 2020 would bring. The Imagining Our Vivid Vision project had completed three collaborative focus groups during the 2019-20 school year. Committee members were in the final stage of identifying and recommending a vision statement when schools nationwide closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the Nov. 19 special board meeting, SBSD will relaunch its IOVV project with a two-hour, collaborative Zoom session for all committee members to contribute and participate through whole-group and site-specific breakout groups. Attendees will revisit the committee's collective work, identify and recommend a vision and revised mission, as well as map out next steps to develop a Sixth Grade Promotion Profile to define what today's future-ready learner looks like.

"Our district had already gathered a vast amount of valuable information during last year's sessions," said Superintendent Jodee Brentlinger, "and we believe it's time to reconvene the group as we continue to move forward. There is no question as we return to this process we must explore new perspectives, challenges, and methods of educating our children in today's world."
