Environmental Literacy Resources
The CA Science Framework highlights that a Key Instructional Shift for the CA NGSS is instruction that is "Relevant to local communities and student interests." Content and skills build on students’ existing experience to learn about and solve real-world problems.”(Chapter 1, Page 8). This relevant context allows all students to have a common foundation to construct science knowledge upon.
The Resources on this page have been developed during Phenomena Summits and Phenomena Design Teams through collaboration between CA Science Experts and CA educators. These resources provide background information related to local phenomena, a grade-level specific driving question, and a causal explantation using developmentally appropriate science ideas. Each resource also includes an activity or lesson to help bring the phenomena into the classroom.
