In October 2023, current County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Paul Gothold announced his plans to retire in June 2024. The following month, the San Diego County Board of Education began the search for the next superintendent to lead the San Diego County Office of Education, serve the region's most vulnerable students, and support school leaders, teachers, and students across the county.

An important part of the search is to engage the community to gather feedback from educational partners regarding what they would like to see in their next superintendent. In December 2023, the board welcomed public input through an online survey, focus groups, and community forum. Another phase of educational partner engagement was conducted in February 2024.

On April 15, the San Diego County Board of Education announced that it selected Dr. Gloria E. Ciriza, current assistant superintendent of Student Services and Programs at SDCOE, to serve as the next San Diego County superintendent of schools. The board approved Dr. Ciriza’s contract at their public meeting on May 8 and she will assume the post on July 1. She will succeed Dr. Paul Gothold, who has served in the role since June 2017.
