About Us

Davila Day School began as part of the Chula Vista Elementary School District on the Vista Square Elementary School campus. In 2009, the school transitioned to operate under the South County Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA) and the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) as its own entity. The school community chose to name it in honor of Dr. Robert Davila, a trailblazer in education and advocacy for individuals with disabilities. The school mascot, a Dalmatian, was chosen for its connection to the deaf community, as Dalmatians are predominantly deaf.

Since its establishment, Davila Day School has proudly served students from South County’s member school districts and neighboring areas, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment.

About Dr. Robert Davila

Dr. Robert Davila’s story is one of resilience and inspiration. Born to migrant farm workers from Mexico, he grew up in Carlsbad, California, with Spanish as his first language. At the age of 8, he lost his hearing due to illness and attended the California School for the Deaf in Berkeley, where he learned American Sign Language.

Dr. Davila achieved many historic milestones throughout his life. In 1948, he became the first minority student to enroll at Gallaudet University. His career spanned decades as a teacher, administrator, and advocate, including serving as CEO of the National Technical Institute for the Deaf and as the 9th President of Gallaudet University. He was also appointed assistant secretary of the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services in the U.S. Department of Education, where he advised on federal policies impacting over 40 million people with disabilities.

Dr. Davila is remembered for his dedication to diversity, unity, and expanding educational opportunities for all students. His compassionate leadership and commitment to service inspire our work at Davila Day School.
