About SDQPI

The focus of SDQPI is to strengthen Early Learning and Care (ELC) systems and supports so that children are healthy and prepared for success. Guided by the San Diego QCC Consortium’s vision, our work ensures that: (1) all children ages 0–5 and their families have access to environments that promote health and enriched learning; (2) adult-child interactions in ELC settings are responsive and nurturing; and (3) children, families, and programs are connected to the supports they need. Through a local mixed-delivery system, we expand access to high-quality ELC for those most in need and build stronger, integrated systems of support.

Quality in early learning is reflected in meaningful provider interactions, a deep understanding of child development, and intentional program planning that fosters effective environments and a strong workforce. Professional development is central to this effort and takes many forms; thought-provoking conversations with peers, training from expert presenters, and learning opportunities tailored to individual interests and program goals.

SDQPI brings quality to life by offering dynamic, personalized professional development that sparks engagement, supports continuous growth, and honors the unique strengths of every provider. The professional learning (PL) opportunities in this catalog are designed to inspire growth, strengthen practice, and celebrate the vital role of educators working with children from birth through Transitional Kindergarten (TK). Each experience deepens impact and empowers educators to create meaningful, lasting learning experiences for every child.

Elements

Professional learning opportunities are aligned to one or more elements of the California Quality Counts California Quality Continuum Framework. The elements are research based indicators of quality and provided a recommended structure for quality improvement.

Child Observation: All children receive individualized instruction and support for optimal learning and development informed by child observation and assessment data.

Developmental and Health Screenings: Children receive support and referrals for optimal physical development, including health, nutrition, and physical activity.

Qualifications for Lead Teacher or Family Child Care: Teachers and caregivers improve their professional knowledge, competence, skill, and effectiveness as life long learners to provide high quality learning experiencing for children and families.

Effective Teacher-Child Interactions: Teachers are prepared to implement effective interactions in the classroom.

Ratios and Group Size: The indoor and outdoor learning environment support children's learning and development.

Director Qualifications: The program and administrators effectively support children, teachers and family by creating site level systems that support quality improvement efforts.

Levels

The different professional development opportunities have differentiated levels of expertise (introductory, intermediate, advanced) to ensure that it is tailored to meet each provider’s needs.

Introductory level workshops provide participants with knowledge of essential areas, and introduces participants to new content.

Intermediate level workshops provide participants with a deeper understanding of content knowledge and strategies for implementation.

Advanced level workshops are for participants that have an increased understanding in the content area, have significant experience working in an early learning and care program and cultivates a long-life learning stance by promoting and sharing evidence-based practices.

Audience

Each workshop is designed with a target audience in mind.

Family Child Care/Family Friend and Neighbor Providers: Individuals who provide care for children in their home.

Site Leaders: Individuals that hold a leadership role who promote and support adults’ professional learning and/or influence and create program policies.

All: Individuals working in all types of early learning and care programs.

Our mission is to provide early intervention, professional development, and foster leadership to ensure every child has equitable access to high-quality early education by supporting the individual needs of children, families, and early learning and care settings that result in sustainable changes.

SDQPI Training Registration policy: To allow equitable access to SDQPI trainings, participants are required to cancel their registration for any training at least 48 hours prior to the start of the training by emailing sdcoepl@sdcoe.net. Participants are not permitted to register for multiple trainings that occur on the same day(s) and time.
