Infants and toddlers learn best from their parents. Because of this, HOPE Infant Family Support helps parents encourage and promote areas of their child's development, including social, emotional, and behavioral. HOPE also understands the importance of developing a collaborative partnership with families to provide an individualized program that meets the unique needs of each child and family. Together through this partnership, we can prevent emotional and behavioral challenges.
HOPE addresses challenging behavior through the Teaching Pyramid Model, a framework for intervention that supports the social and emotional development of infants and toddlers through family coaching. This Model was developed by the Center for Social Emotional Foundations for Early Learning and federally funded Office of Head Start and Child Care Bureau. It is consistent with best practice for all children. The Teaching Pyramid promotes social and emotional development and is designed to prevent emotional and behavioral challenges through promotion of:
- Parent child relationships
- Child development, temperament and individual differences
- Positive learning in home environments
- Emotional Literacy (Understanding and expressing emotion)
- Positive behavior support strategies
- Family wellness by reducing stress
- Inclusion at home and in the community
The Pyramid framework includes more targeted and intensive services through collaborative teaming. A team of experienced professionals (school psychologist, social worker, speech and language pathologist, occupational therapist) lead by a special education teacher will support the family in implementing a variety of research based techniques. More intensive emotional and behavioral needs including difficulty with relating and communication or risk factors for Autism are addressed through assessment- based intervention that results in individualized behavior support plans. Proactive evidenced-based parent training practices may include:
- Floor time
- Social communication
- Visual strategies to increase functional communication
- Formal behavioral analysis/evaluations
- Positive behavioral support
Services are monitored consistently to determine the effectiveness of the intervention plan. Increase in frequency and intensity of services are discussed to meet the individual needs of the child and family. The focus of all interventions is to develop a foundation of social and emotional development within the parent-child relationship by building family routines, preventing behavioral challenges, and supporting successful inclusion in the community.
