About History Day
History Day promotes a learning experience that extends far beyond the classroom. This hands-on approach enhances students’ knowledge of the past and empowers them to draw connections to the present and future. As students immerse themselves in the research process, they learn how to analyze and interpret primary and secondary sources, discern fact from fiction, and develop a deep understanding of the complexities of historical events. All of which prepares them for college, career, and civic life.
This annual competition is open to students in grades 4 through 12 and who attend private or public schools, including charter schools. It encourages young historians to engage in deep research and creative exploration of historical events and figures. They then share their research by creating a documentary, exhibit, paper, performance, podcast, or website.

Independent Students
In some cases, students who attend a school that does not have a teacher sponsor are permitted to participate in National History Day in San Diego. If you or your child would like to participate without a teacher sponsor, please contact Maria Hynes (maria.hynes@sdcoe.net) no later than Jan. 10. Please note: students who attend a school with a teacher sponsor must register for the competition through that teacher. Students who participate independent of a school will be charged a $5 administrative fee on top of normal registration fees.
