Transformative Social and Emotional Learning

Transformative social and emotional learning (TSEL) is a process whereby young people and adults build strong, respectful, and lasting relationships that facilitate co-learning to critically examine root causes of inequity, and to develop collaborative solutions that lead to personal, community, and societal well-being (CASEL, 2020). Through learning about and implementing systemic TSEL, people have the opportunity to acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions, achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions (CASEL, n.d). 

Over 20 years of research has demonstrated when TSEL is implemented with fidelity, schools can expect the following outcomes:

• Greater student engagement and improved academic achievement (Cipriano et. al, 2023; Durlak, Mahoney, Boyle, 2022; Greenberg 2023).

• Healthier, safer school environments with fewer incidents of bullying, aggression, and disciplinary issues; stronger feelings of belonging and inclusion; and the development of key protective factors that reduce mental health risks (Cipriano et. al, 2023; Clarke et. al, 2021; Durlak, Mahoney & Boyle, 2022; Espelage, Rose & Polanin; 2015). 

• Sustained growth in students’ social and emotional skills, leading to positive life outcomes that extend up to 18 years beyond participation (Greenberg, 2023; Heckman, Stixrud & Urzua, 2006; Taylor et. al, 2017). 

• Improved adult well-being, along with stronger educator–student relationships and more effective classroom management (Brackett et. al, 2010; Jennings & Greenberg, 2009)
