What’s Happening is a community service from the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) to connect families, students, and educators with free and low-cost opportunities and resources, including educator grants and scholarships/contests for students. Helpful information is updated regularly on this page with highlights published at the start of each month as an e-newsletter.

The California Association of Student Councils (CASC) is a student-run, student-led nonprofit dedicated to developing the leaders of tomorrow and promoting civic engagement among youth. Rising 9-12 graders can apply for the positions of vice president, secretary, communications director, and more for Region 12, San Diego and Imperial counties.
April is National Volunteer Month and it's a great time to encourage others to join the impact of volunteerism and get involved in their communities. See a list of resources, including some with opportunities for youth volunteers.
Mark your calendars for these upcoming events at the Timken Museum of Art and the Natural History Museum geared specifically for educators. Each event is free to attend, and advance registration is required.
The Padres are excited to celebrate all San Diego County teachers and school staff at Educator Appreciation Night on June 6. See the Padres play the Diamondbacks at 6:40 p.m. The 2024 San Diego County Teachers of the Year and 2024-25 School District Teachers of the Year will be recognized during the game.
For its 2023-24 season, Classics 4 Kids presents professional orchestra concerts for elementary school students. These fieldtrip events taking place at the Balboa Theatre and the Joan B. Kroc Theatre are 50-minute interactive concerts designed for PreK–6. There are still three live perofrmances coming up this season, along with a chance to see a recording of a prior performance in the classroom.
The Future Construction Leaders Camp for teen girls is a unique summer camp happening June 17 to 21 where girls in grades 8 to 12 will learn the essential elements of various construction trades, handle power tools, and develop confidence as they tackle challenging projects. Advance registration is required for this free opportunity.
SDCOE is partnering with the California Department of Education and Wellness Together School Mental Health for the Fourth Annual Mind Out Loud virtual event for students May 1. Middle and high school students from across California, the nation, and throughout the world will have the opportunity to connect with one another about issues of mental health and wellness.
Now is the time for students interested in theatre arts to register for summer opportunities at The Old Globe. Students are encouraged to apply for the Summer Shakespeare Studio or Camp Studio programs. Financial assistance is available to students who indicate a need in their application.
SeaWorld San Diego is offering free park admission to teachers through 2024. The Teacher Fun Card is available for all certified K-12 classroom teachers in Southern California and includes two free single-day tickets. The deadline to register and activate the card is May 31.
